Fattoush – Color, Flavor and Health on a Plate

During summer, our bodies need more hydration and also more vitamins and minerals in order to be able to face the high temperatures. When it is extremely hot outside our appetite is low, but we still have to offer our organism the nutrients that it needs for an optimal performance. Thus, fruits and vegetables should represent a significant portion of the food quantity that we consume during summer and salads come in handy these days.

In the Lebanese cuisine, Fatush has an honored place, being rich in vitamins and minerals that are essential for the well-being of every person. Fatush (or the alternatives fattush, fattoush, fattouche) is originating in Levant and it is one of the most appreciated Lebanese salads, whose recipe may vary according to the area in which is prepared, but also to the preferences of those who make it. In our restaurant, Fatush salad contains tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, sweet pepper, onion, lemon, Lebanese spices, Lebanese bread croutons, pomegranate sauce and olive oil. You already have in mind a bowl full of colors and flavor, right? This is indeed how Fattoush looks like, but you should know that it also contains something else: an impressive series of nutrients that contribute to a great state of mind, while bringing a plus of vitality.

Tomatoes – If you care about your silhouette, you should know that tomatoes contain only 18 calories/100 g and they are an excellent source of antioxidants, fiber, minerals and vitamins. They are recommended for reducing cholesterol, they help preventing cancer and are very good for maintaining the sight, the mucous membrane and the skin. Also, they are good for the health of the bones, because they contain folic acid, vitamin B6, vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin K, potassium, calcium and other minerals.

Cucumbers – They also have few calories, 15 for each 100g. Their skin is a good source of fibers, and the cucumbers itself have potassium and antioxidants, such as beta-carotene and alpha-carotene. In addition, they contain a significant quantity of vitamin K and other vitamins and minerals, which make them beneficial for the organism, because they offer an impressive quantity of water and electrolytes and they have diuretic properties.

Lettuce – The quantity of vitamin A that it contains is impressive, offering 247% of the recommended daily allowance for this vitamin. Also, lettuce contains minerals such as iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium and copper. It can prevent osteoporosis and anemia caused by iron deficit.

Sweet pepper – It is rich in vitamin A, poor in calories and reduces the bad cholesterol. Among these, it contains the same essential minerals as lettuce, along with selenium and vitamins from B complex.

Onion – It is known for having an anti-fungal and anti-bacterial effect, helping, in the same time, with reducing the blood vessels’ rigidity. The onion is a great antioxidant, containing vitamin A, vitamin C and manganese and it has been used since time immemorial for its curative properties.

Lemon – This fruit offers 88% of the recommended daily allowance for vitamin C, is a great help in increasing immunity and it has a strong antioxidant effect. It also contains a significant quantity of minerals such as iron, copper, potassium and calcium.

Spices – The mix of spices used for this salad not only offers it a delicious flavor, but it also brings benefits for those who consume it. Sumak, one of the spices from this mix, represents a rich source of gallic acid, it has anti-fungal and anti-viral properties. It is also a good anti-inflammatory agent. Moreover, mint has a light antibiotic effect, it detoxifies the organism and it is useful in treating colds.

Pomegranate – A fruit that seems to be always on top, being named many times “The Fruit of the year” or “The Superfruit”, the pomegranate assures 40% of the recommended daily allowance for vitamin C for adults, it represents an important source of folic acid and contains vitamin A and vitamin E. This fruit has anti-ageing effects and it fights against Alzheimer, cancer, heart diseases and arthritis.

Olive oil – It has a great content of monounsaturated fats and antioxidants, due to which it is able to prevent heart diseases, while reducing the bad cholesterol and increasing the level of good cholesterol. Also, it is known for preventing gastroduodenal ulcer, gastritis and diabetes mellitus.

Did you notice how many benefits the consumption of a simple salad can bring you? If you want an organism that functions properly, a hydrated skin and a good state of mind, we invite you to our restaurant to try our Fatush salad, which is full of health, flavor and color!
